How to Know If Your Differential Is Bad
Your vehicle’s differential is one of the most important — and most overlooked — components in your drivetrain. When it starts to fail, the warning signs are often subtle at first… then expensive if ignored.
If you’ve been hearing strange noises, feeling vibrations, or noticing leaks, your differential may already be telling you it needs attention.

What Does a Differential Do?
A differential allows your wheels to rotate at different speeds while turning — especially important during cornering. Without it, your tires would skip, bind, and wear rapidly.
Differentials are found in:
- Rear-wheel drive vehicles (rear differential)
- Front-wheel drive vehicles (front differential / transaxle)
- All-wheel drive & 4x4 vehicles (front + rear differentials)
When a differential fails, power delivery, handling, and safety are compromised.
Common Signs of a Bad Differential
Whining or Howling Noise
A high-pitched whining or howling that:
- Increases with speed
- Gets louder during acceleration or deceleration
- Changes pitch when letting off the gas
