When & Why You Should Re-Gear Your Vehicle

What Is a Gear Swap?

A gear swap involves changing the ring and pinion gears inside your differential to a different ratio. This affects:

  • Acceleration
  • Engine RPM
  • Towing capability
  • Overall drivability

Gear swaps are popular for:

  • Lifted trucks
  • Larger tire setups
  • Off-road builds
  • Towing & hauling vehicles

Common Signs of Transfer Case Failure

Difficulty Shifting Into 4WD or AWD

If your vehicle:

  • Won’t shift into 4WD
  • Gets stuck in one drive mode
  • Flashes a 4WD warning light

This may indicate:

  • Failed shift motor or actuator
  • Internal gear wear
  • Electronic control issues

Grinding, Whining, or Clicking Noises

Noises coming from underneath the vehicle — especially during acceleration or when switching drive modes — can signal:

  • Worn bearings
  • Chain stretch
  • Internal gear damage

Noise almost always means internal wear is already occurring.

Transfer Case Fluid Leaks

Transfer cases rely on proper lubrication to prevent overheating.

Signs of a leak include:

  • Fluid under the center of the vehicle
  • Burning smell
  • Low fluid levels

Low fluid can quickly cause severe internal damage.

Vibration or Shudder While Driving

A failing transfer case can cause:

  • Vibrations at speed
  • Shuddering during acceleration
  • Drivetrain binding

These symptoms are often mistaken for suspension or tire issues.
